There are many reasons why we have a hard time achieving our goals. When I start with clients they are usually very motivated and they are ready to make a move in a positive direction. There are times though when some of my clients loose motivation. This is when I ask them to remember their initial goal, because that causes them to think about the reason why they decided to start their program. My goal behind doing this is that they will stimulate the desire that they had when they first came in. As humans in order for us to be motivated to accomplish things sometimes we need to have our goals right in front of us. By writing down your goals and constantly keeping them in front of you then you won’t forget what your goals are and when you are in a situation where you get tempted you can reflect on what your goal ultimately is.

There are thousands of fitness enthusiast in the US. Many who workout several times a week, and compete in different amateur sports and fitness competition. Sometimes even though many of these people enjoy working out they hit the “wall”. This is the place where workouts grow stale and not very challenging. What do you do when you hit the “wall”? The first thing to do is to change your workouts up. Increase your resistance, or workout outside, or even hire a trainer that can over haul your program and make it more challenging. As humans we need constant challenge in order to improve. The less challenging your workouts become than the less results you will see. When you see less results you become less motivated, when you become less motivated everything in your life takes a dive. To break through the mold you must change the status quo. You must tackle new challenges, maybe you should enter yourself in a competition or a physical challenge that will give you something to prepare for. Another thing you could do is work with a fitness professional to reassess your goals and develop new ones that will challenge you for the near future. If you do this then you will see that your progress and your fitness level maintain consistent growth.

You have heard many different theories about how to loose weight, and you probably have tried them all. When it comes down to it though it is simple math. Take in less calories than you expend and you will loose weight. So the question is how can I burn calories throughout the day so that I can enhance my weight loss? Well there are several ways, you can take the stairs instead of the elevator. Also you could walk for 30 mins at lunch time. Speaking of lunch also try to eat metabolism boosting foods for snacks at your desk like apples, grapefruit, yogurt, almonds, turkey, spinach, beans, broccoli, oatmeal, soy milk. You can also try and get up to walk around every 45 mins from your desk if you can. By making these small adjustments you will find yourself burning more calories during the day and increasing your body fat loss.

Many of us try and push ourselves when we exercise to the next level. Some of us succeed and some of us do not, but what is the difference between those who succeed and those who do not? Just two little words “I Can’t”. This morning when I was training a client we were doing some abdominal exercises. I wanted her to go to 4 sets, but after the first 2 sets she says ” I Can’t” keep going. She hadn’t even tried to begin the next set before she stopped herself from completing the full exercise. Of course I told her to change her mindset and try saying to herself “I Can” do it and “this is easy!” When she did that she was able to complete the 4 sets. the problem is when our mind tells our body that we can’t do something then you loose motivation and give up, but if you can switch your “I Can’t” with “I Can” or “I will” then I guarantee you that you will motivate yourself to finish any and everything that you set out to do in your exercise program. This is a trick that I’ve learned over the years with my clients and it has helped them to push themselves to be much better and achieve more than they thought they could. You could do the same thing if you put your “mind” to it.

We are approximately 8 days or so away from the new year. A time when people will begin to make resolutions for themselves that will last less than three months. When we get to the first of the year I will post a topic about sticking to your resolutions, but now we are going to talk about changing your mindset before you even get there. Have you ever noticed when watching an amazing athlete on the field, court, track talk to themselves before they score, or make a big stop? You may say to yourself “I wonder what they are saying to themselves”? The fact is that many of these athletes are preparing their minds to accomplish a task that will help them achieve success. Just like those athletes when you are preparing for a major event like changing your health and fitness, you must begin with preparing your mind to make the change. You MUST be resolute in your decision to make the change in yourself before you can make any physical progress at all. You may ask “what steps can I take to make this mental change”? Well first of all you can write your goals down, then take that piece of paper and hang it up right in front of you, or you can put a short message as a screen saver on your computer that you will see in front of you all the time. The goal when changing your mindset is to put your goals in front of you and leave them there. When you continually have to face your goals, see your goals, then you are more likely to accomplish them because you remember them wherever you go. Changing our minds to a new healthy us involves not brushing them out of the way especially when it is inconvenient. I can tell you having worked with many clients that the clients that have made the most progress have always planned ahead so that they wouldn’t be caught in a position where they had to make bad choices. So as we approach the new year take time to plan for your success by changing your mindset, if you do then you will accomplish more than you ever thought you could.

There are more ways to get and stay in shape now than there ever have been in this country. Many people are ditching traditional gyms, and health clubs to become members of a growing trend, that is Personal Training Studios. Why are Personal Training studios becoming more popular? One major reason is because of the type of programming that members and clients of these studios are getting. People are attracted to new, fun, innovative ways to stay in shape as opposed to just getting on the treadmill and just running. Also many of these Personal Training Studios help results come faster and safer for clients than working on their own. These is becoming such a trend that over the last year memberships at these types of facilities experienced nearly or more membership growth than health clubs. This means two things for us Personal Trainers (1) people are attracted to new innovative fitness ideas, so if you are still doing the same workouts that you’ve done for 10 years it’s time to change it up. (2) as Personal Trainers we are in a unique position to really take our business to the next level by providing a situation like this for our clients. If you are entreprenuerial than use this opportunity to open your own facility, with proper planning of course. You may just make more money and affect more people than you know.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who use Personal Trainers in the United States. There may even be 5, 10, 20 personal trainers at your local gym. If your looking for a Personal Trainer to work with how do you choose who you should work with? There should be many factors that contribute to your decision like personality, industry experience, education, and references. Personal Trainers who work at the top facilities around the country typically have either a degree in an exercise related field and/or a certification from a Nationally recognized Certifying agency that is also an accredited institution, you should ask if your trainer has either of these and also are they current. Another thing to think about is whether you think that your personalities will mesh together while your working out, the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on a Trainer and you don’t really get along or you don’t enjoy their personality. One of the biggest things to me as a fitness professional that clients should ask for is references or testimonials, because if your Trainer is truly good they would accomplish the results that they set out with their clients, granted there may be some circumstances outside their control when working with a client, but nevertheless they should be able to deliver on their promises of results and you should be able to see that they’ve done that. If you follow these simple tips you will find a Trainer that works for you and will see great results.

Many people go about their fitness goals alone. The questions is why? Research has shown that by having a support group around when you are trying to loose weight a person is more not only more likely to achieve their goals, but faster than if they had gone about it alone. There are many options now in the fitness industry that foster group activities like Boot Camps and Circuit Training groups, these are good because clients are usually in a group of people with the same or similar goals striving to achieve the same objective. Even if you decide that a group class is not for you maybe you could grab your best friend and plan something even if it is only once a week to do together because at least you will be accountable to someone other than yourself. Remember if you surround yourself with people who have a similar mindset as you it will keep you true to yourself.
